I am greatly anticipating tomorrow’s hearing in the House for SB 320- Frederick County Board of Education- Membership and Employment.
Last week, the Senate OK’d bill to allow teachers’ spouses to serve on Frederick County’s school board holding a large margin of the vote 39-7. My staff and I are eager to see this bill continue to move on.
Current law in Frederick County prohibits specified individuals in from being elected to or serving on the county board of education. By repealing a provision of this law, all qualified and elected spouses of administrators and teachers will be able to serve on the Frederick County Board of Education despite this spousal connection.
I believe a law that prohibits those married to teachers or school administrators from sitting on the Frederick County Board of Education dampens the democratic process. It is unconstitutional; anyone should be able to run for office.
Frederick County is the only school system I know to have a prohibition of this kind. Learn more about this bill from the Frederick News Post.
